Are, then, these so incalculable benefits of thy Creator inducements enough to thee for continual thanksgiving in return, and for discharging the debt of an endless love; when thou considerest that out of nothing — rather, out of clay — thou wast raised by His bounty to so excellent a dignity in the very beginning of thy state? Test thy life, therefore, by the master-feeling of the saints, and note well what is said of the saint, “With his whole heart he praised the Lord” (Ecclus. xlvii. 10). Behold the end of thy creation, behold the task set thee as God’s servant! Why should God have graced thee with the privilege of so illustrious a lot, if He had not willed thee to apply thyself unceasingly to the praise of Himself? Thou wast created for the glory of thy Creator, that, making His praises thy employment, thou mightest ever advance towards Him by the merit of justice in this life, and mightest live happily in the world to come. For the praise of Him yields the fruit of justice here, and of beatitude hereafter. And if thou praise Him, praise Him with all thy heart, praise Him by loving; for this rule of praising has been laid down for the saints — “With all his heart he praised the Lord, and loved God who made him” (ib.). Praise then, and praise with all thy heart; and whom thou praisest, love; for, for this wast thou created, to praise Him, and to love Him also. For that man praises God, but not with all his heart, who is charmed by prosperity into blessing God, but checked by adversity from the privilege of blessing; whilst that man praises, but without loving, who amid his praises of God seeks for some other good in praising than God Himself. Praise therefore, and praise aright; in such wise that there be in thee no care, no aim, no thought, no anxious bent of mind, uninspired by praise of God, grace helping thee. From praise of Him let no prosperity of this present life seduce thee, nor no adversity restrain thee; for thus shalt thou praise Him with all thy heart. But when thou shalt praise Him with all thy heart, and praise with the homage of thy love as well, then wilt thou desire nothing from Him but Himself, and thou wilt pray that the object of thy longing may be God; the reward of thy toil, God; thy solace in this life of shadows, God; thy possession in that blissful life to come, God. Yes, indeed, thou wast created for this; to praise Him, and to praise Him without end; which thou wilt then more fully understand when, entranced by the blessed vision of Himself, thou shalt see that by His sole and gratuitous goodness thou, when thou wast not, wast created out of nothing; so blessed, and to such unspeakable bliss created; created, called, justified, glorified. Such a contemplation as that will give thee an untiring love of praising Him without end; from whom, and through whom, and in whom thou wilt rejoice in being blessed with blessings so great and so unchangeable. Awake, my soul, awake; bestir thy energies, arouse thy apprehension; banish the sluggishness of thy deadly sloth, and take to thee solicitude for thy salvation. Be the rambling of improfitable fancies put to flight; let indolence retire, and diligence be retained. Apply thyself to sacred studies, and fix thy thoughts on the blessings that are of God. Leave temporal things behind, and make for the eternal. What, then, in so divine an occupation of the mind, canst thou conceive more useful or more salutary than to recall in delighted musing thy Creator’s boundless benefits to thee? Consider what grandeur and what dignity He bestowed on thee in the very beginning of thy creation, and ponder well what loving and what adoring worship thou shouldest therefore pay Him. It was assuredly a noble purpose which He formed for the dignity of thy state, when, creating and ordering the universal frame of the visible and the invisible creation, He determined to make man; for He determined to lavish richer honours on man’s nature than on all other creations in the universe. Behold thy lofty origin, and bethink thee of the due of love thou owest thy Creator. “Let Us make man,” said God, “to Our Image and Likeness” (Gen. i. 26). If thou awakest not at this word, O my soul; if thou art not all aflame with love of Him for His so ineffable graciousness of condescension towards thee; if thine inmost marrow burns not with longings after Him, what shall I say? Asleep shall I call thee? Or must I rather think thee dead? Consider diligently, therefore, what it is to have been created to God’s Image and God’s Likeness; thou hast in this thought the sweet earnest of a pious meditation in which thy musings may have full play. Observe, then, that likeness is one thing; image another. For example, the horse, the ox, or other dumb animal may have a certain likeness to man; but the image of man is borne by none but a human being. Man eats, so does the horse; here is a certain likeness, a certain something common to creatures of diverse moulds. But the image of man is only borne by some human being, some being of selfsame nature with that man whose image he is. Image, therefore, is of a higher order than likeness. God’s Likeness, then, may be attained by us in this way; if, musing on Him as the Good, we study to be good; if, owning Him the Just, we strive to be just; if, contemplating Him the Merciful, we make endeavours after mercy. But how to His Image? Listen. God ever remembers Himself, understands Himself, loves Himself. If thou, therefore, after thy poor fashion, art unweariedly mindful of God, if thou understandest God, if thou lovest God, thou wilt then be man “to His Image;” for thou wilt be striving to do that which God does eternally. ‘Tis the duty of man to bend his whole being to this task; the task of remembering, of understandings and of loving the Highest Good. To this idea should every thought and every turn and folding of thy heart be moulded, chased, and formed; to be mindful of God, to understand Him, and to love Him; and thus savingly exhibit and display the dignity of thine origin in that thou wast created to the Image of God. But why say that thou wast created to His Image, when, as the Apostle testifies, thou art indeed His Image? “The man,” he says, “ought not to cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God” (1 Cor. xii. 7). I don’t know to what degree, but he was at least a third degree. He was shown in his apron and had a masonic funeral. My dad and his wife, my sister, my aunts, and my cousins all attended. I remember it now, but for 30 years I had no memory of it.About two years ago I discovered the walking encyclopedia of Catholic spiritual warfare, Fr.Chad Ripperger. It took a few months to listen to every one of his conferences. I binged themback-to-back, entirely riveted, and ready to hear the wisdom of the church through this very knowledgeable priest. At the time I had recently returned to the Sacrament of Penance after years of minimizing, if not avoiding my own sinfulness and not confessing everything. I prepared for nearly a month for that confession, and finally was able to leave in the confessional many, many burdens that I carried around with me for years. When I finished, my confessor advised me to go to confession onceper month. I’ve missed only once. I now cling to the sacrament of confession with my very soul. I reached Father’s 3-part series on generational spirits. These are demons that attach themselves to families, due to persistent sin, curses, or occult practices. A family might have a generationalspirit when clear patterns of behavior seem to be passed down through their lineage. To root that spirit out, it is important to know exactly what kind of spirit one is dealing with. Fr. Ripperger says in part one of the conference, “precision is everything. You can pray until the cows come home, but you’re not going to get him out of your lineage until you know exactly what his angle is, that is, his nature.”I started thinking that there must be a generational spirit affecting my family. My grandfather was protestant, but my father decided to convert to Catholicism when he was 18. I was raised Catholic and have always loved my faith. I worked in a Catholic bookstore at one time. I went toMass regularly. I attended Catholic conferences, bible studies, retreat weekends, and rosary cenacles. And still I found myself several times over the years gravely backsliding into terrible behaviors, behaviors I seem to share with many members of my family. Note that this is not an attempt to sidestep blame. I bear the responsibility of all my sins, even those I committed when listening to the promptings of a family spirit. I could have said no. I could have confessed far better than I did over the years. I am very much aware that my weaknesses were, and still are, mine. I am a sinner, after all, susceptible to temptation, constantly in need of repentance when I take the bait. In the second part of the conference, Fr. Ripperger explains how to determine which generational spirit is attacking your lineage. He suggests meditation to calm the emotions in order to examine the self objectively; praying to your guardian angel who protects us from the unseen forces thatattack us; and asking the Blessed Mother under the title Our Lady of Sorrows to reveal the nature of the afflicting demon. Our Lady and St. Joseph took Jesus to Simeon, and he told Our Lady, “And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed. (Lk 2:35)” Fr. Ripperger explains that, according to the Church Fathers, “St. Simeon recounted to her everything her Son was going to go through in the passion.” From that moment, she knew the world would reject her Son, and thus reject God. She carried this pain with her from that moment on. Our Lady shares the most intimate relationship with Our Lord. He withholds nothing from her, and if He wills it, allows her to reveal certain details with us. I asked Our Lady of Sorrows to reveal to me the nature of the generational spirit in my family.The next day, I woke up with the memory of my grandfather in his casket wearing a masonic apron, and three men wearing aprons conducting the funeral.I have in my personal library several books about freemasonry. Some have been in my collection for over 20 years. These books did not stir my memory. Neither did learning from my husband that his grandfather was also a mason. I replied that there are no masons in my family. Even when watching Fr. Ripperger’s generational spirits conferences, I actually thought to myself, “wow, I’m sure glad there are no masons in my family,” while he was describing the deliverance generational effects of a masonic curse. It’s not that I didn’t believe Our Lady. It of course was true. Recall, though, what Fr. Ripperger says: “precision is everything.” I looked up my grandfather’s obituary and found on the same page the announcement of his masonic funeral. I called my sister to tell her what I discovered. She also had no memory of our grandfather’sfuneral. She suffered from the same kinds of backsliding that I did, but to a lesser degree. There is an intense temptation toward impulsive, intemperate behaviors, such as alcohol or drug use and promiscuity attached to this curse. Broken families, abuse and molestation are all effects ofthe masonic curse. All these behaviors and effects are rampant in our family. The insidious part is that these behaviors and effects are also how the curse is perpetuated through the generations. Child death is an effect of the masonic curse. My sister had a miscarriage. He was surprised by the presence of another person in the room and explained in his testimony, “‘I could not imagine how he could have entered the friary at this time of night since all the doors are locked.”Seeking to unravel the mystery, Pio asked the man, “Who are you? What do you want?” The man responded, “Padre Pio, I am Pietro Di Mauro, son of Nicola, nicknamed Precoco. I died in this friary on the 18th of September, 1908, in cell number 4, when it was still a poorhouse. One night, while in bed, I fell asleep with a lighted cigar, which ignited the mattress and I died, suffocated and burned. I am still in purgatory. I need a holy Mass in order to be freed. God permitted that I come and ask you for help.” Pio comforted the poor soul by saying, “‘Rest assured that tomorrow I will celebrate Mass for your liberation.”The man left and the next day Pio did some investigative work and discovered the veracity of the story and how a man of the same name died on that day in 1908. Everything was confirmed and Padre Pio celebrated a Mass for the repose of the old man’s soul. This was not the only appearance of a soul from purgatory asking Padre Pio for prayers. Adam Blai, paritus of the Roman Catholic Church in Religious Demonology and Exorcism to the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, has witnessed and assisted at many solemn exorcisms over the years. “I’ve never seen her for myself,” he admits to his riveted audience, “but every soul who has seen her says she is the most beautiful woman they have ever laid eyes on.” I count myself fortunate to have heard him speak recently at The Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted in Youngstown, Ohio. In his presentation titled Traps of the Enemy Now Celebrated in Our Culture Mr. Blai lamented that around the world the Church has ceased to catechize the faithful in spiritual warfare and observed that Christians in general seem embarrassed to even bring it up. Blai has seen first-hand how the rise in practice of wicca, witchcraft, satanism, necromancy, and new age philosophies and rituals, all forbidden by the Church, have resulted in the destruction of real lives. “Young adult sections in bookstores are loaded with books that soften the impressions of the darkness,” he said. He also discussed television and film, particularly how Hollywood will produce entertainment glamorizing these forbidden practices, and don’t care how much damage they cause. The damage is done when we turn to a created spirit to gain what we want, rather than waiting on the Lord, and in doing so we hand our bodies and possessions over to the enemy. “We have been given authority over our bodies and our property,” he said, “and we must keep that authority.” That authority was given to us by God, and His authority trumps all. We should also continue to seek protection from Mary. The Lord Jesus shares that authority with His mother. The powers of hell are no match for her. Mr. Blai discussed how during difficult cases, the exorcist and his team will be stalled, getting nowhere with the demon. Someone will simply suggest praying a few decades of the rosary, and the demon reacts in terror: “not her, anything but her!” Blai discussed how the evil one and his cohort cannot bear to be in her presence. She terrifies them, because she is the source of our salvation, the willing vessel of the Word Incarnate, the woman who, with her Son, would crush the head of the serpent. “Some of these afflicted souls have never heard of Mary, have no idea what the Church teaches about her, and even they are overwhelmed by her beauty. They’ll ask, ‘who was that woman? I have never seen someone so beautiful!’ He continues: “When Our Lady arrives, their expression totally changes. They suddenly have a look of joy on their face. Many smile. Many cry. She is very powerful. And that power was given to her by her Son. “And why wouldn’t He give her everything? It is her blood that flows through His veins. Jesus had no earthly father. His DNA is her DNA. Everything He is in His humanity is from her. She was the first person to reflect the face of love to Him.” He finished with a story he stumbled upon by a seer he did not name. While he stressed that this seer has not been vetted by the Church, Blai recognizes in this brief story depth of love between Jesus and His mother: “Jesus was dying on the cross, and there was she was, right there with him until the end, but she couldn’t hold him or comfort him. So, she sang to Him a lullaby, just as she sang to Him when He was a child. PLACE yourself in the Presence of God. 2. Humble yourself before Him, and ask His Aid. Considerations 1. Once more imagine yourself in an open plain, alone with your guardian Angel, and represent to yourself on the left hand the Devil sitting on a high and mighty throne, surrounded by a vast troop of worldly men, who bow bareheaded before him, doing homage to him by the various sins they commit. Study the countenances of the miserable courtiers of that most abominable king: some raging with fury, envy and passion, some murderous in their hatred; others pale and haggard in their craving after wealth, or madly pursuing every vain and profitless pleasure; others sunk and lost in vile, impure affections. See how all alike are hateful, restless, wild: see how they despise one another, and only pretend to an unreal self-seeking love. Such is the miserable reign of the abhorred Tyrant. 2. On the other hand, behold Jesus Christ Crucified, calling these unhappy wretches to come to Him, and interceding for them with all the Love of His Precious Heart. Behold the company of devout souls and their guardian Angels, contemplate the beauty of this religious Kingdom. What lovelier than the troop of virgin souls, men and women, pure as lilies: widows in their holy desolation and humility; husbands and wives living in all tender love and mutual cherishing. See how such pious souls know how to combine their exterior and interior duties; to love the earthly spouse without diminishing their devotion to the Heavenly Bridegroom. Look around, one and all you will see them with loving, holy, gentle countenances listening to the Voice of their Lord, all seeking to enthrone Him more and more within their hearts. They rejoice, but it is with a peaceful, loving, sober joy; they love, but their love is altogether holy and pure. Such among these devout ones as have sorrows to bear, are not disheartened thereby, and do not grieve overmuch, for their Saviour’s Eye is upon them to comfort them, and they all seek Him only. 3. Surely you have altogether renounced Satan with his weary miserable troop, by the good resolutions you have made; but nevertheless you have not yet wholly attained to the King Jesus, or altogether joined His blessed company of devout ones: you have hovered betwixt the two. 4. The Blessed Virgin, St. Joseph, St. Louis, St. Monica, and hundreds of thousands more who were once like you, living in the world, call upon you and encourage you. 5. The Crucified King Himself calls you by your own name: Come, O my beloved, come, and let Me crown thee! The Choice 1. O world, O vile company, never will I enlist beneath thy banner; for ever I have forsaken thy flatteries and deceptions. O proud king, monarch of evil, infernal spirit, I renounce thee and all thy hollow pomp, I detest thee and all thy works. 2. And turning to Thee, O Sweet Jesus, King of blessedness and of eternal glory, I cleave to Thee with all the powers of my soul, I adore Thee with all my heart, I choose Thee now and ever for my King, and with inviolable fidelity I would offer my irrevocable service, and submit myself to Thy holy laws and ordinances. 3. O Blessed Virgin Mother of God, you shall be my example, I will follow you with all reverence and respect.
