I had no idea how to meditate, so I went down to the Diocesan library. They had fewer materials than I thought a Diocesan library should have, but I managed to find a set of tapes (the title completely escapes me) by a Catholic priest and checked it out. Having been born into the Post-Concillar Church, my parents spent a small fortune on Catholic grade-school with a faith formation program consisting of little more than the infamous “Hi God!” programs. My mother did save her old Maryknoll Crusades magazines from her childhood, and I read those back in grade school, but proper faith formation requires much more than a couple dozen issues of an old Bible study magazine from the 1950s meant to supplement what should be thorough Catechetical training. I was utterly unprepared for what I now know is New Age, progressive thinking. I was also stupid, so I popped the tape in my stereo and went through the meditations. I had a hard time with this priest’s meditations because he kept saying to empty the mind, focus on the sound of his voice, place the self into the scene he was describing. He spent a lot of time talking about breathing and did a few breathing exercises. I really couldn’t get into the tapes. I couldn’t empty my mind. My thoughts kept churning in circles. I credit working at that bookstore with helping me to understand what meditation really is. It’s not the emptying of the mind, but the focusing of our thoughts on The Lord, on Christ, on the mysteries of our faith, on scripture, on the teachings of the Church. I gave up on the tapes, but there was this insert with the tapes that talked about the similarities between the world’s religions; how God knows our hearts and our intentions; how being open-minded to new and different ideas helps us to understand God; how Eastern philosophies use meditation techniques from which Catholics could benefit. I now recognize that this blending of philosophies with Catholicism is an error called “syncretism.” The ideas from that insert planted some serious errors in my mind and opened the door to a near decade long affair with the practice of yoga. It was around 1997 when I caught this fitness bug and was introduced to yoga through workout programs on cable fitness stations. I started with the programs that mixed yoga with dance, and thanks to my High School and College dance training, I picked it all up very quickly. There were full yoga programs as well, with the instructors talking about balance and muscle control. Every so often they’d throw in key phrases like, “find your center”, “focus your breath”, “clear the mind”, “feel your inner warmth”. Today I would clearly recognize these phrases as being in the danger zone; but to me “the center” was a dance term, and the rest, well, I knew what I believed, and in my mind this was all just exercise. I deftly rationalized that the terminology wasn’t important, and I developed my own syncretistic practice. What I was failing to grasp, as I believe do many people, is that ultimately yoga isn’t at all about health and fitness, but more on that later. For nine years I was an on again-off again yoga student. I wasn’t faithful to it for a long time by any means, but I always came back to it, because the physical results were unmatched. I could maintain my figure with a no-impact workout program that also relieved my stress, which was a real bonus when I took a new, demanding job in 2006. I decided then that it was time to get more serious about my yoga practice. I found Yoga Journal online which contained some very compelling articles about the physical benefits of yoga, along with tutorials on the poses. I felt great about my decision and bought myself two books at the beginning of 2007: Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar and Richard Hittleman’s Yoga: A 28-Day Exercise Plan. I also started looking for an instructor, but (luckily) they all overcharge. What can I say, I’m cheap. I flipped through Hittleman’s book, which was for beginners, and decided that I should save the easy book to loan out to someone that might be interested, and just dive right into Iyengar’s more challenging Asana sequences instead. I casually read the Introduction titled, “What Is Yoga?”, perused the photographs of the poses and found the section containing the sequences. It took quite a bit of study, and within 5 months I was advancing quite quickly. I couldn’t get my foot behind my head, but I was able to complete a solid 40-minute “workout”, was getting stronger and more flexible, and was even starting to pick up the Sanskrit terminology. As I progressed, though, I was still having trouble with the whole “empty your mind” thing. I tried to pray my traditional Catholic prayers, but they interfered with my ability to hold a pose. Then there was the breathing. Getting the breathing down is very important. There is this term, “pranayama,” which in its simplest definition means breath. To practice pranayama, as I understood it, you lie on the floor on your…

Summoning The Supernatural Help Of Angels

Summoning The Supernatural Help Of Angels “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”  (John 1:51) Angels are mentioned at least 108 times in the Tanakh (Old Testament) and 165 times in the Brit Chadashah (New Testament).  What do angels do and are they still active in our lives today? Let’s find out. What and Who Are Angels? “Praise the LORD, you his angels [malakh is Hebrew for angel], you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey His word.”  (Psalm 36:16; see also Psalm 103:20–21) The angels we see in movies or read in books perhaps only serve to confuse us about their true nature.  On the other hand, these presentations may also serve to open a dialogue so that a person has the opportunity to hear what the Bible says about angels and the Good News of Yeshua (Jesus). God created angels in a variety of forms and ranks for the purpose of serving. Because of their supernatural nature, it is easy to think that angels possess a god-like quality—yet that is not accurate. “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”  (Hebrews 1:14; see also Psalm 34:7; 91:11–12; Daniel 6:22) The Guardian of Paradise (1889), by Franz Von Stuck The grandeur, power, and mystery of angels makes it tempting to worship them, even though we know that worship of anything other than God is a violation of the First Commandment. We see this, perhaps, when the most beloved Jewish disciple of Yeshua, John, had a vision of the Marriage of the Lamb and of the crystal clear water of life flowing from the throne of God in the New Heaven and Earth.  When John fell at the feet of the angel that revealed these things, the angel rebuked him: “[The angel] said to me, ‘Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Yeshua; worship God.  For the testimony of Yeshua is the spirit of prophecy.”  (Revelation 19:10; see also Revelation 22:8–9) Let’s now look at how angels are used in God’s service for Himself and for us. John the Evangelist on Patmos, (17th c.) by Jacopo Vignali (1592-1664), depicting John receiving revelation from an angel. Angels Reveal Prophecy In the Hebrew Scriptures, angels play key roles in interpreting prophetic visions, just as we see in the Book of Revelation. The angel Gabriel, for instance, revealed the exact timing of the coming of the Messiah to the prophet Daniel (Daniel 9:20–27) as well as the work of the anti-Messiah in “the distant future” (Daniel 8:15–27). In Zechariah 1:9–5:11, angels walk the prophet through his visions, explaining and teaching him, what each vision meant. The Annunciation, by Henry Ossawa Tanner, depicting the Angel Gabriel’s announcement to Miriam (Mary) that she would conceive and become the mother of Yeshua (Jesus). Angels Deliver Messages Another duty of angels is to bring messages.  In fact, in Hebrew, the word “angel” has no equivalent.  The closest word for angels in modern Hebrew is malakhim (מַלְאָכִים), which means messengers. Messenger angels occupy a unique rank in that they often appear in the form of men, as opposed to winged cherubim and seraphim. Malakhim (angels) have appeared to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses.  Isaiah mentions the Malakh Panav, the Angel of God’s Presence. The angel Gabriel gave to Miryam (Mary) this message of prophetic fulfillment: “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.  You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Yeshua.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.  The Lord God will give him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; His kingdom will never end.”  (Luke 1:29–33; see also Isaiah 7:14) Angels Minister “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”  (Hebrews 1:14) Hebrews 1:14 tells us that malakhim are “ministering spirits” sent forth to minister to those “who will be heirs of salvation.” The messages that angels send on behalf of God are two-fold.  Not only do they reveal His plans for their lives, they also serve to minister in times of dire distress. For instance, an angel baked bread for Elijah when he was hiding out in a cave and wanted to die (1 Kings 19:3–6). As well, when Sarah’s maidservant Hagar thought she was about to die, crying out to the Lord, she and Ishmael sat alone in the wilderness with no food or water. The angel of God (malakh Elohim) appeared to relieve her distress saying, “Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.  Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”  (Genesis 21:18) This message is also a tremendous prophecy, as Ishmael became the father of the Arab nations. Angels also ministered to Yeshua (Jesus) during his 40 days of fasting in the wilderness and subsequent temptation by Satan (Mark 1:13). Hagar and the Angel in the Desert, by James Tissot Angels Worship God Angels not only minister to humans, they minister to God through their worship of Him. Isaiah saw Seraphim above God, “each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  And one called out to another and said, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD [YHVH] of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.’”  (Isaiah 6:3) The apostle John saw similar angelic beings around the throne of God.  Day and night they never ceased praising God, saying, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”  (Revelation 4:8) When we receive our glorified bodies, we will join the angels in praising Him as we see the 24 elders doing in Revelation 4:10–11.  However, we should be joining the angels right now praising Him as the Kingdom has come to us, and we know Him. How much time do you spend praising the Lord?  Do you sing praises to Him daily? “The twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. …

The Church Cries Out, Have Mercy On The Whole World

We are living in the time of Mercy which is prior to the time of Justice.  Our Lord revealed Himself to Sister Faustina to ask that the Church pray and ask for His Mercy to fill the world. When we ask for God’s Mercy to come upon the world – we ask for even more than forgiveness, we are asking for God to fulfill His covenant Promise to Israel, His Beloved ones.In these time there is a yearning that can be heard from the Church for the world to be saved. The Church and the world is experiencing an emptiness, and we are, in our sinfulness, asking that God hear our cries to take us out of the Egypt of sin that we have created. Our Lord revealed the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the simple phrase, For the Sake of His Sorrowful Passion, Have Mercy on Us and on the Whole world. In this prayer we are asking that by Mercy we may have our hearts renewed rather than by justice, which God is holding back. This time of Mercy is a great gift to the Church. It is a great gift to the World. We have gone astray and we have the choice of either coming back to him through His Mercy or through His Justice. God the Father has granted a period of Mercy to the world in which we can ask for the world to be transformed by Merciful love rather than Justice. “You will prepare the world for My final coming. Speak to the world about My mercy… It is a sign for the end times. After it will come the Day of Justice.” Jesus to St. Faustina  When we look at the state of our souls, and at the state of the world we might be tempted to think that our sins and the sins of the world are too great. We may be tempted to feel overwhelmed and lost – or feel like evil is winning. When we turn to God we are reminded by St. Faustina to turn to the Mercy of God and allow Him to change us and to love us.It is in calling out for Mercy that God hears us and will respond to our cry for help. God desires us to pray and to ask, and primarily He desires us to trust in His Love and Mercy and to call upon Him for help. In praying to God and asking for His Mercy to come, we are crying out with the very cry of the Holy Spirit. “I realize more and more how much every soul needs God’s mercy throughout life and particularly at the hour of death. This chaplet (of Divine Mercy) mitigates God’s anger, as He Himself told me.” (No. 1036)” – Saint Faustina We have heard through the words of various seers that we are living in times worse that Sodom and Gomorrah and worse than the time of the Flood. The difference is that we have recourse to the Sacraments and to Divine Grace. Sister Faustina says that we can mitigate and lessen the wrath of Divine Justice. As the Angel stand with his flaming sword we can respond with Penance and prayers for Mercy to fill the earth.  Subscribe for our FREE Newsletter Submit You have been successfully Subscribed! Ops! Acedia, The Noonday Demon! SLOTH & IT’S CONNECTION TO DEPRESSION!

SLOTH & IT’S CONNECTION TO DEPRESSION! By Rosario Lim In the medieval Latin tradition of the seven deadly sins, acedia has generally been understood as the sin of sloth. It involves a variety of psychological states, primarily laziness, ennui, or boredom. More recently, it has been connected to depression. It is the “noonday demon” that attacks the believer when the sun is at its highest and the heat unbearably oppressive. It drains a person of energy and life. In the spiritual life, acedia paralyzes the natural functions of the soul, such that prayer life is neglected, ultimately leading to spiritual death and sometimes even suicide. Extreme despair drove Judas Iscariot to hang himself, after betraying Our Lord. St. Peter, on the other hand, wept and repented after denying Our Lord three times. Both men sinned against God, but they had very opposite reactions to their grave offenses. Judas committed another sin by believing that he was absolutely damned and he challenged God’s infinite capacity for forgiveness. St. Peter, after repenting and asking for the Lord’s forgiveness, went on to become the first Pope of the true Church. Ephesians 6:12 states that we wrestle against spiritual forces of evil. This means we are involved in spiritual warfare against demonic agencies that are seeking to destroy us through passions and mental disorders. There are weapons and therapies that may be used against these evil powers and our disordered desires. Start by putting on the Armor of God, as described in Ephesians 6. Persevere in faith and trust that Our Lord will protect His children, as promised in Psalm 91. Be patient with yourself. Keep working and praying. Our Lord has conquered the world, and He will help us defeat acedia.
