Remember, O Lord, that during the Last Supper with Thy disciples, having washed their feet, Thou gavest them Thy Most Precious Body and Blood, and while at the same time thou didst sweetly console them, Thou didst foretell them Thy coming Passion. Remember the sadness and bitterness which Thou didst experience in Thy soul as Thou prayed:  “My Soul is sorrowful even unto death.” Remember all the fear, anguish and pain that Thou didst suffer in Thy delicate Body before the torment of the Crucifixion, when, after having prayed three times, bathed in a sweat of blood, Thou wast betrayed by Judas, Thy disciple, arrested by the people of a nation Thou hadst chosen and elevated, accused by false witnesses, unjustly judged by three judges during the flower of Thy youth and during the solemn Paschal season. Remember that Thou wast despoiled of Thy garments and clothed in those of derision; that Thy face and eyes were veiled, that Thou wast buffeted, crowned with thorns, a reed placed in Thy hands, that Thou was crushed with blows and overwhelmed with affronts and outrages. In memory of all these pains and sufferings which Thou didst endure before Thy Passion on the cross, grant me before my death true contrition, a sincere and entire confession, worthy satisfaction and the remission of all my sins. THE SECOND PRAYER Our Father, Hail Mary      O Jesus! True Liberty of Angels, Paradise of Delights, remember the horror and sadness which Thou didst endure when Thy enemies, like furious lions, surrounded Thee, and by thousands of insults, spits, blows, lacerations and other unheard-of cruelties, tormented Thee at will.  In consideration of these torments and insulting words, I beseech Thee, O my Saviour, to deliver me from all my enemies, visible and invisible, and to bring me, under Thy protection, to the perfection of eternal salvation.  THE THIRD PRAYER Our Father, Hail Mary      O Jesus! Creator of Heaven and earth Whom nothing can encompass or limit, Thou Who dost enfold and hold all under Thy loving power, remember the very bitter pain Thou didst suffer when the Jews nailed Thy sacred hands and feet to the cross by blow after blow with big blunt nails, and not finding Thee in a pitiable enough state to satisfy their rage, they enlarged Thy Wounds, and added pain to pain, and with indescribable cruelty stretched Thy body on the cross, pulled Thee from all sides, thus dislocating Thy limbs.  I beg of Thee, O Jesus, by the memory of this most loving suffering of the cross, to grant me the grace to fear Thee and to love Thee.   THE FOURTH PRAYER Our Father, Hail Mary      O Jesus! Heavenly Physician, raised aloft on the Cross to heal our wounds with Thine, remember the bruises which Thou didst suffer and the weakness of all Thy members which were distended to such a degree that never was there pain like unto Thine.  From the crown of Thy head to the soles of Thy feet there was not one spot on Thy body that was not in torment, and yet, forgetting all Thy sufferings, Thou didst not cease to pray to Thy Heavenly Father for Thy enemies, saying:  “Father forgive them for they know not what they do. “Through this great Mercy, and in memory of this suffering, grant that the remembrance of Thy Most bitter Passion may effect in us a perfect contrition and the remission of all our sins.  THE FIFTH PRAYER Our Father, Hail Mary      O Jesus! Mirror of Eternal Splendor, remember the sadness which Thou experienced, when contemplating in the light of Thy divinity the predestination of those who would be saved by the merits of Thy sacred Passion, Thou didst see at the same time, the great multitude of reprobates who would be damned for their sins, and Thou didst complain bitterly of those hopeless lost and unfortunate sinners.  Through this abyss of compassion and pity, and especially through the goodness which Thou displayed to the good thief when Thou saidst to him:  “This day, thou shalt be with Me in Paradise.” I beg of Thee, O Sweet Jesus, that at the hour of my death, Thou wilt show me mercy.  THE SIXTH PRAYER Our Father, Hail Mary      O Jesus! Beloved and most desirable King, remember the grief Thou didst suffer, when naked and like a common criminal, Thou was fastened and raised on the cross, when all Thy relatives and friends abandoned Thee, except Thy beloved Mother, who remained close to Thee during Thy agony and whom Thou didst entrust to Thy faithful disciple when Thou saidst to Mary:  “Woman, behold thy son!” and to St. John: “Son, behold thy Mother!” I beg of Thee O my Saviour, by the sword of sorrow which pierced the soul of Thy holy Mother, to have compassion on me in all my affliction and tribulations, both corporal and spiritual, and to assist me in all my trials, and especially at the hour of my death.  THE…

Words Are Necessary

HOME ABOUT M&R MYSTICS ON M & R Privacy Policy ARTICLES BOOKS DONATE FREE DOWNLOADS CONTACT US PRAYER REQUESTS LIVE PRAYERS HOME ABOUT M&R MYSTICS ON M & R Privacy Policy ARTICLES BOOKS DONATE FREE DOWNLOADS CONTACT US PRAYER REQUESTS LIVE PRAYERS WATCH ONLINE Words Are Necessary By Gina Marie At a parish function last week, I got into a conversation with a young man we’ll call Frank. With many Catholics, lack of formation is not evident until you get into a conversation with them about a contentious topic. In our conversation, Frank stated that it was wrong for bishops to withhold communion from politicians who supported abortion. He was under the very misguided impression that political figures have the same authority as bishops. This, of course, is not the case. I clearly spelled out the errors in his thinking, from the fundamental truths regarding the beginnings of human life, to the role of the bishop as successor to the Apostles with regards to his entire flock, including elected officials. When I finished, he said, “you have some strong opinions about these things.”“These are not my opinions,” I replied, “but Church teaching.” This difficult conversation with Frank was not the first, and it won’t be the last. I have been in discussions about every topic under the sun: the papacy, abortion, socialism, women clergy, freemasonry, new age philosophy, eastern religions, human sexuality, forgiveness…the list goes on and on. It’s always more difficult when the discussion is with another Catholic. Like Frank, many Catholics do not know their faith very well. I suspect it’s because they don’t hear the truth in its fullness spoken enough. They aren’t well versed in Scripture, the Catechism, or the teachings of the saints. There is a saying that many Catholics are quite fond of. It’s attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, but that attribution has been refuted over the years numerous times, as St. Francis was a rather prolific preacher. It goes something like, “preach the gospel at all times; use words if necessary.”Not only was this not a teaching of St. Francis, but it never was a teaching of the Church. In fact, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states otherwise, repeatedly. Here is one example, paragraph 1816: “The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it.” Here is another, paragraph 2472: “The duty of Christians to take part in the life of the Church impels them to act as witnesses of the Gospel and of the obligations that flow from it. This witness is a transmission of the faith in words and deeds.” Profess it. Words and deeds. Words are clearly necessary, no ifs about it.Without using words, error cannot be dispelled. We can’t just watch someone live their life and understand the tenets of our faith when it comes to the more difficult teachings. Our faith demands more than just pleasantries and agreeability.“’All however must be prepared to confess Christ before men and to follow Him along the way of the Cross, amidst the persecutions which the Church never lacks.’ Service of and witness to the faith are necessary for salvation: “So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.’ (CCC 1816)”My conversation with Frank did not end badly, but other conversations have. I’ve lost more than a few friends over the years for witnessing to the truth. A woman who once called me her godmother decided I was anathema because I did not agree with her sudden decision to enter a homosexual relationship. I’ve lost other friends because I spoke up about supporting pro-abortion politicians as cooperating with evil. I continue tolose friends because I speak up about abortion, socialism, homosexuality, and other topics that too many Catholics support. These losses, however unfortunate, are to be expected. Jesus said, “If the world hate you, know ye, that it hath hated me before you (Jn 15:18).” Taking up these unpopular views is exactly what Jesus told us we must do: to deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow Him. "For he that will save his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it. For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? (Mt. 16:25-26)” I would rather lose a friendwho was, in the end, no friend, than lose Jesus, the best friend I could ever have, in this world and the next, because I was not prepared to use the very necessary words required to proclaim the gospel. Venerable Fulton John Sheen was an American Bishop born May 8th 1895 and died December 9th 1979. Renowned for his preaching especially on television and radio, a prolific orator and theologian, he also had a great sense of humour. In his television series titled ‘The woman I love’, he relates a funny story of his total reliance on Our Lady to get him out of a pickle. He was a priest student in a university in Belgium and said he will never forget his first visit to Lourdes in France, where our Lady appeared to Saint Bernadette 18 times in the year 1858.  The Bishop had just enough money for the travel. Not enough to cover his living expenses in Lourdes, not enough to pay for a hotel stay. He asked his brother, a medical student in a university if he could help him but his brother was a typical university student barely managing his own expenses. He thought to himself that if he had faith enough to go to Lourdes to celebrate the 5th anniversary of his ordination it’s up to the blessed Mother to pay his bills.  So he arrived in Lourdes broke. He decided that if our Lady was going to pay his hotel bills she could just as well pay a big bill as a little one. When you ask for miracles you must never be a piker! He checked into a nice hotel and decided to stay 9 days making a nine day novena. The 9th morning nothing happened, the 9th noon nothing happened, the 9th evening still nothing happened. Then it was serious. He thought he would give our Lady another chance. So he went down to the grotto about 10:30 at night and while he was kneeling in prayer, a man tapped him on his shoulder asking if he was an American priest and if he spoke French, yes the bishop replied. Do you know Paris, ‘yes’ he replied. The man said, ‘will you come with my family to Paris tomorrow and talk French and show us the city’. He then walked the bishop back to his hotel and asked him , what he considered, the most important question in his life ‘ have you paid your hotel bill yet’ and without further ado the bill was settled. The Bishop had more money than when he started out.  The moral of the story is not to go into a hotel and run up bills but it worked for him he said. He thanked our Lady profusely. The Bishop doesn’t recommend that any one try this stunt. Subscribe for our FREE Newsletter Submit You have been successfully Subscribed! Ops! Something went wrong, please try again. Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ. Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns. (Include your personal intentions now.) Holy St. Francis, your concern for God’s creation caused you to be named patron of ecology. May we, through your prayers, follow your footsteps in being good stewards of all of creation which God our Creator has provided. May we also be faithful stewards of the skills and abilities we have been given. St. Francis, help us to continue praying for the grace to truly repent and change our hearts by actively seeking reconciliation with God and all those we have offended or hurt in any way. May the blessings we receive through your intercession deepen our faith, and inspire us to store up treasures in Heaven, where we hope to spend eternity with our loving God. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen St. Francis of Assisi, Pray for us! In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Reflection: While Francis was in church praying, he heard God say, “Go Francis, and restore my church.” Francis immediately went out and began to move stones and to beg for supplies. Another word for prayer is relationship – if we spend time in prayer listening to God, He will speak to us. If I want God to answer my prayers then I must be as ready as St. Francis to respond to God when he calls me into action. Action: Spend five minutes in “relationship” with God today. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Reflection: Francis had to grow in holiness. He had a great fear and loathing of lepers. He would ride away quickly so as not to speak to them. One day he asked himself, “Is this what Jesus would do?” And inspired by the answer he knew in his heart to be true, he began to care for those less fortunate and trusted in God to care for him in return. Can I change my response to the “lepers” in my life? Will I find the face of Christ? Action: Today, consider how, with God’s help, you can change your attitude. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns. (Include your personal intentions now.) St. Francis, as you left a comfortable life to lead a life of poverty and service to others, we ask you to pray that we also realize the folly of seeking to amass material wealth and gain power and control over others less fortunate than we are. Today I humbly give something that I don’t really need to the poor as an offering to God our Father, hoping this act signals a start of my conversion. St. Francis, help us to continue praying for the grace to truly repent and change our hearts by actively seeking reconciliation with God and all those we have offended or hurt in any way. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Reflection: St. Francis, a wealthy young man, scorned beggars until he realized they, too, were God’s children. He vowed never again to refuse anyone who asked him something in God’s name. God calls you, as he did St. Francis, to undergo a “conversion” experience. Many times in our lives we see the face of God in others, yet do not act.
