The End Times & The Great Warning: What Every Catholic Should Know

The End Times: The Great Warning and the Illumination of Conscience — A Catholic Perspective

As the world grows darker and more distracted, many Christians are turning their hearts to the mystery of the End Times. Among the most intriguing and sobering topics tied to this moment in salvation history is what many mystics and Marian apparitions have referred to as the “Great Warning” or Illumination of Conscience.

Rooted in Scripture, foreshadowed by saints, and echoed in alleged apparitions — especially Garabandal — this global event is believed to precede the final purification of the world and the coming of Christ as Judge.

This article offers a Catholic overview of the Great Warning, what the Catechism of the Catholic Church, approved mystics, and Marian apparitions say about the End Times — and, most importantly, how we should live in preparation.

🔔 What Is the Great Warning or Illumination of Conscience?

The term “Illumination of Conscience” refers to a moment when every person on earth will suddenly see the state of their soul as God sees it. This includes the good we’ve done, the sins we’ve committed, and the impact of those sins on others and ourselves.

Alleged Marian Apparitions — Garabandal

In the early 1960s, the Blessed Virgin Mary allegedly appeared to four young girls in Garabandal, Spain. Though not officially approved by the Church, the apparition gained wide attention, especially because of its prophetic message of:

  1. A Great Warning

  2. A Great Miracle

  3. A Conditional Chastisement

According to the visionaries, the Great Warning would be:

  • A global, supernatural event experienced by every person simultaneously

  • An inner revelation of each soul’s moral state before God

  • A last mercy before the coming chastisement and the Second Coming

“The Warning is something that is seen in the sky, everywhere in the world and immediately transmitted into the interior of our soul. It will last a very short time, but it will be very effective… It will be a correction of the conscience of the world.” – Conchita Gonzalez (Garabandal visionary)

📜 What Does the Catechism Say About the End Times?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 675–679) provides the official doctrinal framework for understanding what must occur before the return of Christ:

1. A Final Trial and Religious Deception

“Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers.” – CCC 675

  • This trial includes a pseudo-religious deception, often identified with the rise of the Antichrist

  • The deception offers false peace and a human-centered salvation

2. The Antichrist and the Mystery of Iniquity

“The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist… a pseudo-messianism.” – CCC 675

  • The Antichrist may not necessarily be a single person but a system or ideology opposing Christ

3. God’s Final Triumph and the Last Judgment

“God’s triumph over the revolt of evil will take the form of the Last Judgment.” – CCC 677

There will be no earthly utopia. The Kingdom will only be fully revealed after the final cosmic upheaval.

📚 What Did the Saints and Mystics Say?

🔹 Jesus to St. Faustina (Divine Mercy)

“Before I come as the Just Judge, I am coming first as the King of Mercy… He who refuses to pass through the door of My mercy must pass through the door of My justice.” – Diary, 1146

The Divine Mercy message reveals the same structure:

  • Warning (illumination/awakening of conscience)

  • Time of mercy

  • Final judgment

🔹 St. Bridget of Sweden

“Before Antichrist comes the portals of the faith will be opened to great numbers of pagans.”

This suggests a mass conversion after the Warning — a final opportunity for salvation.

🔹 Blessed Anna Maria Taigi

Spoke of a worldwide supernatural light where all people would see themselves as God sees them.

🔹 Venerable Fr. Michel Rodrigue (unapproved, yet widely followed)

He has spoken of a coming illumination of conscience that will act as a universal examination of soul — triggering either repentance or rebellion.

🌍 What Will Happen During the Warning?

According to mystical and Marian sources, the Great Warning will include:

ElementDescription
🔥 Spiritual LightA beam of divine light will pierce every conscience
👁️ Interior VisionPeople will see all their sins, even forgotten ones
⏳ Timeless MomentIt will feel as if time stops briefly
⚖️ Judgment GlimpseA preview of what we deserve if we died at that moment
⛪ OpportunityA final invitation to repentance and return to God

This event is not meant to terrify but to save — by awakening sleeping consciences before it’s too late.

🙏 How Can We Prepare?

Whether the Warning happens in our lifetime or not, Catholics should be living in daily spiritual readiness:

1. Daily Examination of Conscience

  • Use Ignatian or traditional models to review your day

  • Ask: How have I loved? Where have I failed?

2. Frequent Confession

  • Aim for monthly confession at a minimum

  • Confession is a preparation for judgment

3. Mass and Eucharistic Devotion

  • The Eucharist is our strength for endurance and holiness

  • Spend time in Adoration

4. Marian Devotion and the Rosary

  • Our Lady has consistently asked for daily Rosary

  • Wear the Brown Scapular or Miraculous Medal

5. Spiritual Reading and Catechism Study

  • Familiarize yourself with Church teaching

  • Avoid falling into false doctrines or sensationalism

⚖️ Final Thoughts: The Warning Is Mercy

Though many fear the end times, Catholic teaching calls us to hope. The Warning — if it occurs — is not about God’s wrath, but His mercy. It is a call to wake up, to repent, and to return to the Father.

The Second Coming will happen — no one knows when. The best preparation is to live as if it were today.

“Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” – Matthew 24:42
