Francis Remler recommends that we do not argue with the temptation or give it any undue attention, but rather to remove ourselves from the temptation and to immediately occupy ourselves with some other thing. He tells us that we should not attempt to face the temptation head on. It is suggested that we do not try to face the temptation head on, but rather refuse it any space in our mind and go to battle with it indirectly.   We should first get in a habit of finding a short prayer that we find encouraging and helpful for fighting our temptation. Perhaps we can find a role model from a Saint who has faced similar temptations and invoke their help. Fr. Francis Remler says this prayer should be a short phrase or sentence. Afterwards we should go and do something else. Yes, instead of trying to battle it directly we should go and occupy ourselves with some other activity. We cannot fight temptations such as evil thoughts as we can “drive away a dog with a stick.” Go and talk with someone, read a book, go for a walk, go swimming, or watch a good TV show. The point is to make the effort to remove oneself from being drawn in by the thoughts that are tempting us.   While we might be tempted to feel bad about ourselves because how strong the temptation is, but we should not allow this feeling to grab hold of us and convince us to give into the temptation. Temptations to sins that we have committed in the past can have a particular stronghold over our emotion and memory. Try not to recall or give thought to sins of the past against purity. Do not give much thought to the sin against purity in terms of deciding if it was a venial or mortal sin. The less thought given to it, the more the mind is free from the temptation and occasion of sin. The fight against evil is real, and the fight against temptation is a battle. St. Michael help us be strong against the evil one who wants to defeat us.  Devotion Prayers for The Virtues Of Purity And Chastity Opening Prayer Dear Jesus, I know that every perfect gift, and especially that of chastity, depends on the power of Your providence. Without You a mere creature can do nothing. Therefore, I beg You to defend by Your grace the chastity and purity of my body and soul. And if I have ever imagined or sensed anything that could stain my chastity and purity, blot it out, Supreme Lord of my powers, that I may advance with a pure heart in Your love and service, offering myself on the most pure altar of Your divinity all the days of my life. Amen. 1. Dear Jesus, bless our social and cultural climate. Grant that our society may be purified of everything contrary to chastity, and that we may have the strength to resist the pressures of prevailing distortions of human sexuality. “In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33). “In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Rom 8:37). Hail Mary… 2. Dear Jesus, bless our relationships. Grant that they will be holy, healthy, and honorable at all times. “Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere love of the brethren, love one another earnestly from the heart” (1 Pet 1:22). Hail Mary… 3. Dear Jesus, bless our efforts at modesty. Grant that how we dress and carry ourselves may veil what should be veiled, and give us the strength to resist evil fashions and the glamour of sin. “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Rom 12:2). Hail Mary… 4. Dear Jesus, bless our five senses. Grant that the things we see, the music and jokes we hear, our food and drink, and the encounters we have through touch may all be pure and holy. “Seek the things that are above” (Col 3:1). Hail Mary… 5. Dear Jesus, bless our sensuality. Grant that our impulses may not go after base pleasures, but will be freed by Your wisdom and inflamed for what is good. “In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood” (Heb 12:4). Hail Mary… 6. Dear Jesus, bless our imagination. Grant that we may be preserved from the fantasies and daydreams that defile us, that all impure images may vanish, and that we may be protected from all the assaults of demons. “Be renewed in the spirit of your minds” (Eph 4:23). Hail Mary… 7. Dear Jesus, bless our memory. Grant that no dark memories from our past may haunt us, but let Your light shine within us to fill us with a healing hope in You. “And every one who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure” (1 Jn 3:3). Hail Mary… 8. Dear Jesus, bless our power of estimation. Grant that we may quickly sense dangers to chastity, instinctively flee from them, and that we may never turn away from higher and more difficult goods for the sake of sinful self-indulgence. “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Mk 8:36). Hail Mary… [Note: estimation ~ ability to make judgments] 9. Dear Jesus,…

PLACE yourself in the Presence of God. 2. Ask Him to inspire your heart. Considerations 1. Consider how long it is since you first began to commit sin, and how since that first beginning sin has multiplied in your heart; how every day has added to the number of your sins against God, against yourself and against your neighbour, by deed, word, thought and desire. 2. Consider your evil tendencies, and how far you have followed them. These two points will show you that your sins are more in number than the hairs of your head, or the sand on the seashore. 3. Apart from sin, consider your ingratitude towards God, which is in itself a sin enfolding all the others, and adding to their enormity: consider the gifts which God has given you, and which you have turned against the Giver; especially the inspirations you have neglected, and the promptings to good which you have frustrated. Review the many Sacraments you have received, and see where are their fruits. Where are the precious jewels wherewith your Heavenly Bridegroom decked you? with what preparation have you received them? Reflect upon the ingratitude with which, while God sought to save you, you have fled from Him and rushed upon destruction. Affections and Resolutions 1. Humble yourself in your wretchedness. O my God, how dare I come before Thine Eyes? I am but a corrupt being, a very sink of ingratitude and wickedness. Can it be that I have been so disloyal, that not one sense, not one faculty but has been sullied and stained; not one day has passed but I have sinned before Thee? Was this a fitting return for all my Creator’s gifts, for my Redeemer’s Blood? 2. Ask pardon; throw yourself at the Lord’s Feet as the prodigal son, as the Magdalene, as the woman convicted of adultery. Have mercy, Lord, on me a sinner! O Living Fountain of Mercy, have pity on me, unworthy as I am. 3. Resolve to do better. Lord, with the help of Thy Grace I will never again give myself up to sin. I have loved it too well; henceforth I would abhor it and cleave to Thee. Father of Mercy, I would live and die to Thee. 4. In order to put away past sin, accuse yourself bravely of it, let there not be one sinful act which you do not bring to light. 5. Resolve to make every effort to tear up the roots of sin from your heart, especially this and that individual sin which troubles you most. 6. In order to do this, resolve stedfastly to follow the advice given you, and never think that you have done enough to atone for your past sin. Conclusion 1. Thank God for having waited till now for you, and for rousing these good intentions in your heart. 2. Offer Him all your heart to carry them to good effect. 3. Pray that He would strengthen you. PLACE yourself in the Presence of God. 2. Ask Him to inspire your heart. Considerations 1. Consider the material gifts God has given you, your body, and the means for its preservation; your health, and all that maintains it; your friends and many helps. Consider too how many persons more deserving than you are without these gifts; some suffering in health or limb, others exposed to injury, contempt and trouble, or sunk in poverty, while God has willed you to be better off. 2. Consider the mental gifts He has given you. Why are you not stupid, idiotic, insane like many you wot of? Again, God has favoured you with a decent and suitable education, while many have grown up in utter ignorance. 3. Further, consider His spiritual gifts. You are a child of His Church, God has taught you to know Himself from your youth. How often has He given you His Sacraments? what inspirations and interior light, what reproofs, He has given to lead you aright; how often He has forgiven you, how often delivered you from occasions of falling; what opportunities He has granted for your soul’s progress! Dwell somewhat on the detail, see how Loving and Gracious God has been to you. Affections and Resolutions 1. Marvel at God’s Goodness. How good He has been to me, how abundant in mercy and plenteous in loving-kindness! O my soul, be thou ever telling of the great things the Lord has done for thee! 2. Marvel at your own ingratitude. What am I, Lord, that Thou rememberest me? How unworthy am I! I have trodden Thy Mercies under root, I have abused Thy Grace, turning it against Thy very Self; I have set the depth of my ingratitude against the deep of Thy Grace and Favour. 3. Kindle your gratitude. O my soul, be no more so faithless and disloyal to thy mighty Benefactor! How should not my whole soul serve the Lord, Who has done such great things in me and for me? 4. Go on, my daughter, to refrain from this or that material indulgence; let your body be wholly the servant of God, Who has done so much for it: set your soul to seek Him by this or that devout practice suitable thereto. Make diligent use of the means provided by the Church to help you to love God and save your soul. Resolve to be constant in prayer and seeking the Sacraments, in hearing God’s Word, and in obeying His inspirations and counsels. Conclusion 1. Thank God for the clearer knowledge He has given you of His benefits and your own duty. 2. Offer your heart and all its resolutions to Him. 3. Ask Him to strengthen you to fulfil them faithfully by the Merits of the Death of His Son. OUR FATHER, etc. Gather the little spiritual bouquet. PLACE yourself before God. 2. Ask Him to inspire your heart. Considerations 1. God did not bring you into the world because He had any need of you, useless as you are; but solely that He might show forth His Goodness in you, giving you His Grace and Glory. And to this end He gave you understanding that you might know Him, memory that you might think of Him, a will that you might love Him, imagination that you might realise His mercies, sight that you might behold the marvels of His works, speech that you might praise Him, and so on with all your other faculties. 2. Being created and placed in the world for this intent, all contrary actions should be shunned and rejected, as also you should avoid as idle and superfluous whatever does not promote it. 2. Consider how unhappy they are who do not think of all this, who live as though they were created only to build and plant, to heap up riches and amuse themselves with trifles. Affections and Resolutions 1. Humble yourself in that hitherto you have so little thought upon all this. Alas, my God, of what was I thinking when I did not think of Thee? what did I remember when I forgot Thee? what did I love when I loved Thee not? Alas, when I ought to have been feeding on the truth, I was but filling myself with vanity, and serving the world, which was made to serve me. 2. Abhor your past life. I renounce ye, O vain thoughts and useless cogitations, frivolous and hateful memories: I renounce all worthless friendships, all unprofitable efforts, and miserably ungrateful self-indulgence, all pitiful compliances. 3. Turn to God. Thou, my God and Saviour shalt henceforth be the sole object of my thoughts; no more will I give my mind to ideas which are displeasing to Thee. All the days of my life I will dwell upon the greatness of Thy Goodness, so lovingly poured out upon me. Thou shalt be henceforth the delight of my heart, the resting-place of all my affections. From this time forth I will forsake and abhor the vain pleasures and amusements, the empty pursuits which have absorbed my time; the unprofitable ties which have bound my heart I will loosen henceforth, and to that end I will use such and such remedies. Conclusion 1. Thank God, Who has made you for so gracious an end. Thou hast made me, O Lord, for Thyself, that I may eternally enjoy the immensity of Thy Glory; when shall I be worthy thereof, when shall I know how to bless Thee as I ought? 2. Offer. O Dearest Lord, I offer Thee all my affections and resolutions, with my whole heart and soul. 3. Pray. I entreat Thee, O God, that Thou wouldest accept my desires and longings, and give Thy Blessing to my soul, to enable me to fulfil them, through the Merits of Thy Dear Son’s Precious Blood shed upon the Cross for me. PLACE yourself in the Presence of God. 2. Ask Him to inspire your heart. Considerations 1. Consider that but a few years since you were not born into the world, and your soul was as yet non-existent. Where wert thou then, O my soul? the world was already old, and yet of thee there was no sign. 2. God brought you out of this nothingness, in order to make you what you are, not because He had any need of you, but solely out of His Goodness. 3. Consider the being which God has given you; for it is the foremost being of this visible world, adapted to live eternally, and to be perfectly united to God’s Divine Majesty. Affections and Resolutions 1. Humble yourself utterly before God, saying with the Psalmist, O Lord, I am nothing in respect of Thee, what am I, that Thou shouldst remember me? O my soul, thou wert yet lost in that abyss of nothingness, if God had not called thee forth, and what of thee in such a case? 2. Give God thanks. O Great and Good Creator, what do I not owe Thee, Who didst take me from out that nothingness, by Thy Mercy to make me what I am? How can I ever do enough worthily to praise Thy Holy Name, and render due thanks to Thy Goodness? 3. Confess your own shame. But alas, O my Creator, so far from uniting myself to Thee by a loving service, I have rebelled against Thee through my unruly affections, departing from Thee, and giving myself up to sin, and ignoring Thy Goodness, as though Thou hadst not created me. 4. Prostrate thyself before God. O my soul, know that the Lord He is thy God, it is He that hath made thee, and not thou thyself. O God, I am the work of Thy Hands; henceforth I will not seek to rest in myself, who am nought. Wherein hast thou to glory, who art but dust and ashes? how canst thou, a very nothing, exalt thyself? In order to my own humiliation, I will do such and such a thing, “I will endure such contempt: “I will alter my ways and henceforth follow my Creator, and realise that I am honoured by His calling me to the being He has given; I will employ it solely to obey His Will, by means of the teaching He has given me, of which I will inquire more through my spiritual Father. Conclusion 1. Thank God. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and praise His Holy Name with all thy being, because His Goodness called me forth from nothingness, and His Mercy created me. 2. Offer. O my God, I offer Thee with all my heart the being Thou hast given me, I dedicate and consecrate it to Thee. 3. Pray. O God, strengthen me in these affections and resolutions. Dear Lord, I commend me, and all those I love, to Thy never failing Mercy. OUR FATHER, etc. At the end of your meditation linger a while, and gather, so to say, a little spiritual bouquet from the thoughts you have dwelt upon, the sweet perfume whereof may refresh you through the day. Summoning The Supernatural Help Of Angels

Summoning The Supernatural Help Of Angels “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”  (John 1:51) Angels are mentioned at least 108 times in the Tanakh (Old Testament) and 165 times in the Brit Chadashah (New Testament).  What do angels do and are they still active in our lives today? Let’s find out. What and Who Are Angels? “Praise the LORD, you his angels [malakh is Hebrew for angel], you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey His word.”  (Psalm 36:16; see also Psalm 103:20–21) The angels we see in movies or read in books perhaps only serve to confuse us about their true nature.  On the other hand, these presentations may also serve to open a dialogue so that a person has the opportunity to hear what the Bible says about angels and the Good News of Yeshua (Jesus). God created angels in a variety of forms and ranks for the purpose of serving. Because of their supernatural nature, it is easy to think that angels possess a god-like quality—yet that is not accurate. “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”  (Hebrews 1:14; see also Psalm 34:7; 91:11–12; Daniel 6:22) The Guardian of Paradise (1889), by Franz Von Stuck The grandeur, power, and mystery of angels makes it tempting to worship them, even though we know that worship of anything other than God is a violation of the First Commandment. We see this, perhaps, when the most beloved Jewish disciple of Yeshua, John, had a vision of the Marriage of the Lamb and of the crystal clear water of life flowing from the throne of God in the New Heaven and Earth.  When John fell at the feet of the angel that revealed these things, the angel rebuked him: “[The angel] said to me, ‘Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Yeshua; worship God.  For the testimony of Yeshua is the spirit of prophecy.”  (Revelation 19:10; see also Revelation 22:8–9) Let’s now look at how angels are used in God’s service for Himself and for us. John the Evangelist on Patmos, (17th c.) by Jacopo Vignali (1592-1664), depicting John receiving revelation from an angel. Angels Reveal Prophecy In the Hebrew Scriptures, angels play key roles in interpreting prophetic visions, just as we see in the Book of Revelation. The angel Gabriel, for instance, revealed the exact timing of the coming of the Messiah to the prophet Daniel (Daniel 9:20–27) as well as the work of the anti-Messiah in “the distant future” (Daniel 8:15–27). In Zechariah 1:9–5:11, angels walk the prophet through his visions, explaining and teaching him, what each vision meant. The Annunciation, by Henry Ossawa Tanner, depicting the Angel Gabriel’s announcement to Miriam (Mary) that she would conceive and become the mother of Yeshua (Jesus). Angels Deliver Messages Another duty of angels is to bring messages.  In fact, in Hebrew, the word “angel” has no equivalent.  The closest word for angels in modern Hebrew is malakhim (מַלְאָכִים), which means messengers. Messenger angels occupy a unique rank in that they often appear in the form of men, as opposed to winged cherubim and seraphim. Malakhim (angels) have appeared to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses.  Isaiah mentions the Malakh Panav, the Angel of God’s Presence. The angel Gabriel gave to Miryam (Mary) this message of prophetic fulfillment: “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.  You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Yeshua.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.  The Lord God will give him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; His kingdom will never end.”  (Luke 1:29–33; see also Isaiah 7:14) Angels Minister “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”  (Hebrews 1:14) Hebrews 1:14 tells us that malakhim are “ministering spirits” sent forth to minister to those “who will be heirs of salvation.” The messages that angels send on behalf of God are two-fold.  Not only do they reveal His plans for their lives, they also serve to minister in times of dire distress. For instance, an angel baked bread for Elijah when he was hiding out in a cave and wanted to die (1 Kings 19:3–6). As well, when Sarah’s maidservant Hagar thought she was about to die, crying out to the Lord, she and Ishmael sat alone in the wilderness with no food or water. The angel of God (malakh Elohim) appeared to relieve her distress saying, “Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.  Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”  (Genesis 21:18) This message is also a tremendous prophecy, as Ishmael became the father of the Arab nations. Angels also ministered to Yeshua (Jesus) during his 40 days of fasting in the wilderness and subsequent temptation by Satan (Mark 1:13). Hagar and the Angel in the Desert, by James Tissot Angels Worship God Angels not only minister to humans, they minister to God through their worship of Him. Isaiah saw Seraphim above God, “each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  And one called out to another and said, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD [YHVH] of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.’”  (Isaiah 6:3) The apostle John saw similar angelic beings around the throne of God.  Day and night they never ceased praising God, saying, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”  (Revelation 4:8) When we receive our glorified bodies, we will join the angels in praising Him as we see the 24 elders doing in Revelation 4:10–11.  However, we should be joining the angels right now praising Him as the Kingdom has come to us, and we know Him. How much time do you spend praising the Lord?  Do you sing praises to Him daily? “The twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. …

He was one of the seven deacons in the city of Rome, i.e. responsible for the finances and social work of the Church of Rome. According to tradition, when the Roman bishop Sixtus II was arrested and beheaded under the persecutor of Christians, Emperor Valerian (200-260), his deacon Laurentius was distraught that he was not deemedworthy to share this death. Sixtus comforted him with the promise that he would follow him in three days and commissioned him to distribute the church treasury to the suffering and poor. Emperor Valerian laid claim to these treasures. Laurentius asked for three days to think it over and during this time he distributed the Church’s wealth to the poor.  The enraged Valerian had Laurentius tortured and finally ordered him to be slowly martyred to death over a fire on a grate. Even in this terrible torture, he kept his sense of humour and teased the executioner to turn him over on the fire, because the roast was already cooked on one side. Laurentius is one of the most venerated saints of the Church and was given almost the importance of Peter and Paul.  The church of S. Lorenzo fuori le Mura ( meaning outside the walls) was built over his grave in 330 by Emperor Constantine (285-337) and is one of 5 minor papal basilicas. It is also one of the 7 pilgrim churches in Rome.    There are some 30 churches in Rome named after St. His commemoration day is the day of his death 10 August. At this time in the annual vegetation cycle, the phase of grape ripening begins. The winegrowers offer their first grapes to him on this day. The St. Laurent variety is also named after him. Shooting stars on August nights are called “Laurentius tears”. Subscribe for our FREE Newsletter Submit You have been successfully Subscribed! Ops! Something went wrong, please try again.
